How do you make a fireplace look distressed?
Remove a small amount of paint by sanding the brick with fine-grade sandpaper. To achieve a weathered appearance, experiment with the depth and speed of your sanding. When removing large pieces of paint from the fireplace, rub them away with steel wool. The sandpaper has a smoother finish, whereas the steel wool has a rougher appearance.
Is painted brick a fad?
There have been painted brick homes for a long time. As far as I can tell, this isn’t just another trend.
How do you make brick look distressed?
Afterwards, apply an acrylic primer to the brick, followed by a coat of acrylic paint. As long as you remember that much of the color will come off as part of the process of distressing you can apply additional coats of paint.

Even if your brick has already been painted, a whitewashed appearance is still possible. Preparation is the same as in the previous project. Brick needs to be repaired and cleaned as necessary. Make sure there aren’t any gaps or cracks in your mortar.
