Crocodilians are reptiles that can live on land and in water, making them excellent hunters. Their eyes can focus objects in air, but previous refractive and anatomical studies suggest their ability to refocus the eye underwater may be restricted.

Do alligators actually walk underwater?

Fortunately, the alligator’s clever lung shifting means he can get around in the water with little disturbance. Using only the movement of his lungs to dive, surface, turn, and roll through the water, he is able to lurk in the shadows until it is too late for dinner to flee.

During mating season, alligators have been known to become agitated, but not aggressive, towards divers. Then, they’re prone to moodiness. Even when large gators are removed because they are causing problems in the springs, another smaller gator will soon move in and take their place.

To intentionally approach an alligator, tempt it, or otherwise provoke it is never a good idea. There are very few alligator attacks and even fewer alligators that eat humans. Only a small percentage of attacks result in death, and in many cases, the remains are still intact.
