What Do Baby Parakeets Eat?

Baby parakeets are omnivorous in nature. Baby parakeets eat insects, flowers, fruits, buds, etc. Seeds are their most favorite food. Baby parakeets are native to Australia and they are called budgies there, but now they are found all around the world.

When a baby parakeet grows up and is 7-8 weeks old then he should be ready to leave his mom’s nest and to find his new one. 

A newborn baby parakeet is very tiny in size with no feathers on the body and eyes closed. Baby parakeet opens his eyes after 2-3 days, and then his parents start to feed him.

Insects and bugs

Baby parakeets can eat different small insects and bugs. Baby parakeets can eat crickets, ants, spiders, and caterpillars. Baby parakeets also eat beetles and flies. Baby parakeets can eat garden pests which are a type of aphid and worms. Also, Baby parakeets eat stray pests because they contain a large amount of protein.

Baby parakeets need to eat every three to four hours and they take rest at night for about 8 hours. As baby parakeets grow the diet requirement also increases.

When a baby parakeet grows up for about five weeks then the baby starts eating by own self.

Fruits and vegetables

Baby parakeets eat fruits and vegetables. Almost 15% of their diet consists of plants and fruits. Baby parakeets can eat fruits like melons, apples, peaches, and bananas. Baby parakeets will eat pears, grapes, kiwi, oranges, and berries. 

Baby parakeets can eat vegetables like cucumber, celery, and its leaves, broccoli stems, bok choy, cabbage, and carrots. However, baby parakeets love to eat bird seeds and they are very nutritious for them.

What baby parakeets don’t eat?

Baby parakeets should not eat apple seeds, onions, avocados, beans because some raw Beans can be toxic to baby parakeets. Baby parakeets should not eat chocolates, cheese, dates, and dairy products.
