What Do Baby Scorpions Eat?

Writer Andrew Davis

Baby scorpions are known as scorplings. They are born alive. They are not hatched like other insects. They have a very soft exoskeleton. They crawl up on the back of their mother for about 10-20 days. When baby scorpion become stiff and hard, they crawl off and live life on their own. They glow in the dark. Like some other crawling insects they also like to hide in dark places.

Scorplings are creamy white in color. They can be reproduced without fertilization. The size of a scorpling is less than one inch when born. Scorpions are xerocoles. Mostly they live in deserts. They can also be found in mountains, caves, and intertidal zones.

The venom of a baby scorpion is only enough to kill insects, not a human or any huge animal. An adult scorpion can brood 100 baby scorpions at one time. The life cycle of a scorpion depends upon three stages; the egg (when they are inside their mother), the nymph (when they start looking like a scorpion), and the last one is the adult stage.

The lifespan of a newborn scorpion is between 2 to 6 years. Some species are recorded for living 20 years.

Insects and worms

Baby scorpions mainly eat insects like moths, ants, ticks, mites, roaches, spiders, locusts, and pinhead crickets. Baby scorpions also eat worms like mealworms, wax worms, earthworms. Baby scorpions are fed little by little starting with two crickets a day and the number goes on increasing eventually with hunger needs. Baby scorpions also eat centipedes. Even adult scorpions also eat other scorpions.
