What Do Baby Slugs Look Like?

Writer Emily Cortez

Baby slugs are gooey invertebrate creatures. They have no true brain and leave a trail of slime wherever they go. They belong to the phylum Mollusca as they have soft and slimy bodies.

The slugs, with four tentacles, 27000 teeth, and no bones, live in almost every habitat of the Earth until their surroundings are damp and cool, mostly found in gardens or sheds. They are omnivores and detritivores and feed on everything and anything they come across. This article will discuss what their bodies are made up of and what type of appearance they have.

What Baby Slugs Look Like?

Baby slugs are one of the slowest creatures on Earth. They look like snails but lack a prominent shell; instead, baby slugs have a soft and transparent shell usually internalized called the mantle that protects the internal organs of baby slugs. Their usual length is about 1.5 inches and weighs up to 1-10 mg. They are light brown or grey, usually lighter in color than adults.

They do not have mouths, eyes, or ears but four tentacles. The upper two tentacles on their head work as eyes and nose and are used for detecting light and odor. The lower two tentacles are used for taste and touch. They have thousands of microscopic teeth, approximately around 27000. They don’t chew their food as they have ribbon-like microscopic teeth called a radula that acts like a circular saw cutting the food as they eat.

Baby slugs have extremely soft and slimy bodies as they don’t have a single bone, not even a tongue. Their body is mostly made up of water and soft tissues. They have long bodies with no hands or legs. They have a small muscle at the bottom of their body called the foot, which helps slugs move their bodies, which is why slugs are incredibly slow.
