Baby swans leave their nests after 24 hours of hatching and start swimming with their parents. Interestingly, they enjoy a “piggyback ride” on their mother when tired and seek shelter under her wings. However, at the age of 6 months, they leave their parents and join larger flocks. This article will describe the physical appearance of baby swans and how do they look like.

What Baby Swans Look Like?

Baby swans are covered with fizzy, soft down feathers. Initially, their feather color is dark sooty grey on the head and neck regions whereas all being white below. However, it entirely turns to white approaching the first winter. At the time of birth, baby swans are tiny, feeble, and weigh about 250 grams. However, they put on up to 7 kg at the age of six months.

Baby swans are unable to fly due to the presence of down feathers. It requires six weeks for the appearance of mature feathers necessary for flight. Their legs and feet color is pink, yellow, and dusky brown depending upon the species. But it changes to black at the end of the first year.

Baby swan’s bills’ color depends on the species as trumpeter and tundra baby swans bill color is pink at the tip and black at the base which turns to black after one year. At the same time, mute baby swans have a black bill color when hatching, which turns to orange black at maturity. Their eyes are just like shiny black dots and nasal openings present on the anterior part of the bill.
