What Do Bagworms Look Like?

Writer Caleb Butler

Bagworms are moth-like wingless insects. They are destructive garden pests that attack trees. They attack more than 120 trees, but they prefer evergreen trees like juniper, cedar, and spruce. Therefore, they are commonly called evergreen bagworms. However, they also destroy deciduous trees such as willow, maple, and oak.

They feed on the leaves of plants. Their larvae feed on needles of evergreen plants. About 1350 species of bagworms have been found till now. They are parasitic. Moreover, they are inoffensive to humans. In this article, we will discuss what type of appearance do they have.

What Bagworms Look Like?

Bagworms are tiny, moth-like, and wingless insects that are destructive to trees. They have a size that ranges from 1 to 2 inches. They have a body that is made up of segments. They have a shiny dark body with an amber-colored translucent head. Adults’ bagworms have a black color appearance, whereas females have a yellow appearance. On average, a bagworm looks like a tiny caterpillar.

They are difficult to spot since they tend to stay in protective cocoon bags. Their larvae live in that cocoon which is about 2 inches long and 0.5 inches wide. Cocoons look like large and long pointed cones and look like a spindle. Bagworms remain inside the cocoon till late summer when the male comes out to mate. Moreover, Bagworms are difficult to recognize because they make concealed cocoons by spinning silk and tree foliage.

In the larvae stage, bagworms extend their head and thorax from cocoons to destroy trees. The adult female comes out for breeding or remains in the case if the male extends its abdomen into a female for breeding. However, some species of bagworms are fertilized without mate with males. Moreover, female bagworms die without laying eggs; instead, larvae emerge from the abdomen their death.
