Bassets are a large breed of dog with a big body and relatively small legs. Because of their bulk, they are slow-maturing dogs, usually not reaching the full size until around the age of two. Bassets can be identified immediately by their long, crooked legs. Their large ears are hanging down, and large heads have hanging lips, sad eyes as well as wrinkled faces.

The tail curvatures upwards and is carried a bit briskly. The body is lengthy and with short legs, creating a rectangle-shaped appearance for bassets. The Basset is a lovely small, compact coat with no hair that is long on the tail or legs. The most popular colors are tricolor, white and red; however, any color hound is fine.

Personality:

A basset is an affectionate pet that is easygoing and sociable. They were originally a pack hunter and packs; they are well-behaved with other dogs as well as other pets generally. They are social dogs and are great with children. They are incredibly intelligent dogs. Bassets aren’t easy to train since they are quite stubborn. A strong, patient, and steady hand and a lot of creativity are necessary to unleash the best in them. Bassets are notorious barkers, and because of their sturdy feet and nails, they are prone to become diggers. The urge to hunt is extremely strong, and if secured, they can leave in their own way.

Living With:

Basset hounds require a strong person who is in charge of their diet since they have a distinct tendency to get overweight which could cause major issues with their backs. Bassets aren’t athletes who must run daily; however, they should take an enjoyable long stroll at least every other day to stay fit. The majority of bassets live until 12 or 13 years old.

Being packs animals, basset dogs have a need for companionship and feel most at ease when they have their family around. They’re not very good watchdogs. They may bark, they also smile at strangers with joy. The loose lips can cause some talking and drooling. Many owners have towels in a strategic location in the home for cleaning. Bassets who are left on their own could easily turn into disruptive dispersers and even barkers. Bassets are smart dogs, but they’re not easy to train.

Begin training with your puppy and provide plenty of training that is positive to keep them engaged. They are fond of hunting and tracking, even if it’s just an occasional leisure activity. Grooming is relatively easy and simple and takes only a quick swipe of one or two brushes once each week. Between groomings, the Basset can carry a lot of dirt or mud in the home due to their short stature and huge feet.

History:

The basset hound is a breed that dates to the 1500s when pre-revolutionary French used low-slung and heavy-bodied hounds to chase rabbits. “Bas,” as a word, means “low. “bas” is French for “low,” befitting the Basset hound’s size. Many of the short and bowl-shaped French hunting dogs, as well as the basset hound that we know, were fine-tuned in England during the 1800s. Except for the size and leg shape, they are akin in appearance to St. Hubert’s dog.

Bassets were chosen not just because of their exceptional scenting abilities. However, hunters were able to keep pace with the slower-paced dogs. They hunted not just animals like hares and rabbits; they were also used to locate larger animals wounded. Then, in the United States, the Basset quickly changed from a hunting dog to a pet for the family.
