A bowhead whale is a species of baleen whale and belongs to the Balaenidae family and it is the only representative of the genus Balaena. It is endemic to only Arctic and Subarctic water. It has a massive angular-shaped head that it uses to break through the Arctic that’s why it is named a bowhead whale. Bowhead whales can live up to 100 years but some studies suggested they may live up to 200 years in captivity. It is a 60 feet long whale and can leap fully out of water.

The average body weight of a bowhead whale is around 60 to 80 tons without any exception. The only predator of a bowhead whale is a Killer Whale. Bowhead whales are least concerned in the matter of extinction but in some regions, they are considered endangered due to habitat factors. It is the oldest whale in the world, around 114 years old. They mate once a year, in late winters or early spring, and give birth between April and June. Females normally have only one cab in 3 to 4 years.

Bowhead whales are herbivores mainly forage on aquatic plants. They have long baleen plates as compared to other whales. Bowhead whales eat marine invertebrates, from small to moderate-sized crustaceans, like shrimps and shrimp-like euphausiids such as fresh krill and copepods. Bowhead whales mainly eat fish, like crayfish, catfish, goldfish, eels, slugs, tadpoles, and oftentimes some sea birds.
What bowhead whales do not eat?
Bowhead whales are herbivores but still can eat fishes but not other big fleshy animals. Bowhead whales don’t eat dairy products like eggs and milk etc.
