Known for their wood cutting habits, carpenter bees are the types of bees dwelling in wood. They are different from the common bumblebees in a way that their abdomen is shiny and hairless. On the other hand, bumblebees usually possess a hairy abdomen.
Because they make tunnels into different kinds of wood, carpenter bees are considered pests. They don’t consume the wood, but they do significant damage by drilling holes in the wood. That’s where they build their nests in the form of wood tunnels. Besides, they love to store their collected nectar and pollen in the wood tunnels. So what do carpenter bees eat if not the wood? Insects and Animals
Carpenter bees make the tunnels in the woods, but do they consume the bugs? Well, carpenter bees aren’t built to consume insects or bugs. Besides, carpenter bees don’t eat flying, crawling, live or dead insects found in their surroundings.
You won’t ever see these aggressive guys eating each other or others for that matter. Of course, they can sting using their stingers to protect themselves and their nests. In short, carpenter bees don’t eat insects, animals, or other animal-based particles.
Fruit, Vegetables, and Plants
Flying from one flower to another, carpenter bees have a very specific diet-related to vegetation. Carpenter bees don’t eat fruit or strawberries.
Carpenter bees don’t directly eat the flowers, their seeds, or the stem. They, however, consume its products which are edible for carpenter bees. That being said, carpenter bees eat pollen, honey, nectar, flowers, fruit, and flower nectar.
These minuscule food particles make up most of their diet. Carpenter bees can slurp the pollen and nectar. They also collect and store huge amounts of nectar in the wood tunnels. So that no carpenter bee starves to death!
Utilizing the sharp teeth, carpenter bees eat Trex and other soft tree products. Plus, carpenter bees eat sugar water because they are attracted to anything sweet!
What carpenter bees don’t eat?
Almost everyone thinks of carpenter bees as woodcutters of some sort. Certainly, it is true. In fact, carpenter bees can make tunnels that are longer and deeper. They have the capability to damage hardwoods including cedar and cypress among others. However, they don’t feed on the wood.
Carpenter bees don’t eat plants, wood, painted wood, teak, pressure treated wood, composite wood, cypress, cedar wood, or treated lumber. In addition, carpenter bees don’t eat trees, cedar siding, drywall, hemlock, leaves, pine, redwood, stained wood, or through painted wood.
As for the insects, carpenter bees don’t eat insects, ants, flies, bugs, wasps, bumblebees, honey bees, cicadas, mosquitoes, or termites. Carpenter bees don’t eat at night because they aren’t active feeders at night.
They usually fly over flowers in the daytime, consuming and collecting nectar as much as they can. Besides, carpenter bees don’t eat each other, or dead carpenter bees are found in their nests. While carpenter bees and carpenter ants serve somewhat the same purpose, carpenter bees don’t eat carpenter ants.
