What do cats hunt? - Kylon Powell

Learn What Cats Hunt

Cats hunt by themselves, and their prey is tiny in size since this is all they’re capable of hunting by themselves. The most frequent type of prey for cats are smaller mammals as well as birds. Cats are also adept enough to capture larger prey, like rabbits. Because of the tiny dimensions of the prey they catch, cats are required to kill a lot of prey over an entire day to satisfy their requirements for the day. In reality, cats that have no additional food sources from an owner can produce up to 10 to 20 kills every day.

Similar to large cats, domestic cats are efficient predators. They hunt and capture vertebrate prey with tactics like leopards and tigers through pouncing. They then unleash a deadly neck bite using the long teeth of their canines that causes spinal cord injury to the victim, which causes fatal bleeding cutting the carotid artery and jugular vein or crushing the trachea. The domestic cat is able to hunt and consume around 1,000 species, with a large portion of which are invertebrates, particularly insects. Many large cats eat less than 100.

Cats have evolved to be extremely adept at hunting, as compared to other mammals, such as dogs. It is believed to be the result of a mutation that has caused their ancestors’ loss of the taste for sugars, restricting the amount of food they eat from plants. Because they have less need to digest plant matter, the digestive tract of their bodies has been altered to be smaller and too small for the efficient digestion of plants, but there is less of a weight penalty to the speed of movement needed to hunt. Hunting is also a major component of their behavior patterns as well as their desire for brief bursts of intense exercise, which are followed by lengthy periods of relaxation.
