Desert tortoises are herbivores that eat plants, fruits, vegetables, flowers, grass, and so on. Desert tortoises eat cactus, prickly pear cactus, tomatoes, watermelon, carrots, apples, strawberries, bananas, cabbage, celery, grass, spinach, lantana, hay, alfalfa, and aloe vera. Desert tortoises should not eat avocado because it’s toxic to them.

Desert turtles can eat insects, bugs, ants, scorpions, birds, beetles, caterpillars, carrion, crickets, mealworms, grasshoppers, meat, and snakes. However, it’s not the best thing for them to eat because the diet of desert tortoises should be more plant-based.

In Captivity

The majority of desert tortoises are herbivores. When in captivity, desert tortoises eat flowers, plants, grass, vegetables, and fruits. Their diet should mainly be a vegetation one. Even though they can eat insects, it’s not one they are supposed to eat.

In The Wild

In the wild, desert tortoises will mainly eat cacti, grasses, and various flowers and plants. They can live very long in wild, however, probably even longer in captivity. What desert tortoises eat is usually consistent regardless of where they are because their dietary needs don’t change. Also, they need certain vitamins and nutrients that are in the vegetation diet that they consume on a regular basis.

You don’t have to feed desert tortoises everyday. However, it’s recommended that you feed them for about 5 days of the week to be on the safer side. Baby desert tortoises also require a plant-based diet similarly to adult ones.

Even though desert tortoises can eat insects and some animals, it does not mean that you should feed them these things because it’s not the best thing for them to eat. They require a vegetation diet to grow and live longer. Also, their bodies and digestive systems are better suited for flowers, plants, fruits, and vegetables. So, this is has to be taken into consideration if you decide to feed a desert tortoise.
