When it is time for hunting, electric eels employ the hunting technique called a doublet. Using this hunting technique, electric eels would spot the prey by sending electric pulses.

This is something that makes them aware of any prey that is not sighted otherwise. Hence, electric eels eat fish, sharks, squid, crustaceans, amphibians, eggs, and even mammals as well.

As for the insects, electric eels also enjoy consuming aquatic insects and other small prey items. Electric eels can swallow the fish and other prey with their wide jaws.

The kind of fish electric eels eat shrimp, small sharks, tuna, and other small fish. On rare occasions, electric eels also consume birds, larvae, worms, and so on.

Electric eels are strictly carnivores, sticking to an animal-based diet as their main staple. They won’t consume plants, fruit, vegetables, or other parts of plants such as algae or seaweed. After all, they get their required energy by consuming live meat as a whole in one bite!

Electric eels detect the prey using their electric pulses. Doing so, they catch the prey successfully by paralyzing it. Once the prey is stunned, electric eels eat by swallowing it as a whole.

Electric eels enjoy pretty much every meal, but some food items are excluded. Electric eels don’t eat plants, algae, plant matter, humans, or piranhas.
