Halibut is the common name of flatfish. Physically halibut is dark brown and white from the underside with small scales which obviously no one can see with the naked eye. It has a translucent to light green color. They are found in northern areas in temperature and arctic waters. The maximum size of halibut is 8cm long and 5cm wide. Pacific halibut has a mass of 200 kg, and on the other hand, an Atlantic halibut has a mass of 180kg their average weight is 500 pounds. Halibut has a carnivore diet. Halibut can eat anything that fits in her mouth, like crabs, octopuses, small fishes, larvae and plankton, etc.

The average lifespan of halibut is around 25 years, over 25 years is rare, but once a halibut of 55 years was found.

It is found mostly in the Northern Pacific Ocean, North Japan, East Asia, and the southern Chukchi Sea in the Arctic Ocean. In Northern US, halibut is found Mexico and California. 

Halibut is the most precious fish of Alaska. People like to eat this fish and it’s way better if cooked on low flame and grilled fish or steak fish is eaten oftentimes. Some animals like Greenland sharks, killer whales, and seals are enemies of halibut. Now let’s have a look at what halibut can eat.

Aquatic Animals

As halibut is a carnivore, it can only eat meat. Halibut mainly eat sand crabs, small fishes, sculpins, sand lances, herrings, and groundfish. Halibut also eat octopus, clams, worms, crustaceans, sand eels, cod, haddock, pogge, capelin, lumpfish, and even small halibut. Big halibut eats tiny shrimps. Halibut also eat salmon, sand dabs, ghost shrimps, mackerels, sardines, opalescent squid, and lizardfish. Halibut may eat live squids also.
