Despite being an herbivore, adult finches feed their nestlings meat to keep them nourished with protein. The average lifespan of a house finch is about 11 years and 7 months, some live shorter. House finches have a rare existence in this world. They lay pale blue to white eggs with black speckles. Their nesting period is about 12 to 19 days. It’s a highly social bird and very rarely seen sitting alone, always found chirping in backyards, and sometimes brings its flocks in backyards.

Fruits and Plants Seeds

As they have an herbivore diet, house finches mostly eat plant material like different plant seeds of different kinds. House finches will eat nyjer seed, which is one of the favorite foods to eat. Additionally, house finches eat thistle seeds, black oil sunflower seeds, and nettle seeds. House finches mainly eat seeds mostly in winters. In fruits, house finches like to eat oranges, apples, grape jelly, plum, strawberries, cherries, raspberries, peanuts, apricots, peaches, and pear. Also, house finches like to eat safflower which is a hopper feeder for them, millet and thistle in plants. House finches will eat hummingbird nectar, bread, and cracked corn.

Insects, Eggs, and worms

Know that house finches will eat many small bugs. House finches can eat bees, aphids, cicadas, mosquitos, spiders, Japanese beetles, and wasps. Also, house finches will eat small worms and mealworms as dry food. Also, house finches eat worms as their live food. Due to calcium deficiency, house finches can eat their eggs, but they never eat their babies. In the wild, house finches will eat mustard seeds, thistle, mulberry, knotweed, cactus, and poison oak. Also, as a fun fact, House finches are able to eat upside down.
