Kangaroo rats are small nocturnal rodents. They belong to arid areas of western North America. They hop in a similar manner to a kangaroo, they usually develop this locomotion independently, similar to other classes of rodents. There are 20 species of kangaroo rats; they usually live in North American desserts. They have hind legs that are why they can jump longer and are very good with their jumps they can leap about 2.7m at once while running from predators.

Diet

Kangaroo rats have an herbivore diet; they have a folivore behavior, despite eating whole fresh plants they like to feed on the dried leftover plant matter and are mostly seed eaters.

Plants

In plants, kangaroo rats mostly like to eat cactus usually fresh pads of the plant, especially the prickly pear cactus, barrel cactus, and star cactus. Also, kangaroo rats like to eat Joshua’s tree and grass seeds. They also eat fruit sometimes, but it’s not their favorite diet. They also like to eat the purslane plant. Nuts are mainly included in their diet. The most important feed for kangaroo rats is a variety of seeds. Kangaroo rats love to eat seeds and also sagebrush.

Water

Kangaroo rats only drink water when they feel they need to drink it, otherwise, they fulfill their water requirements by extracting small amounts of water from seeds.

Insects and other animals

If we talk about insects, kangaroo rats mostly like to eat scorpions, tarantulas, small ants, grasshoppers, crickets, and beetles, etc. Kangaroo rats can definitely eat insects.

Other than that, kangaroo rats eat meat, birds, lizards, small mammals, frogs, and earthworms. Additionally, kangaroo rats eat jackrabbits that are smaller in size; large jackrabbits might eat kangaroo rats too.

They don’t have animals that are bigger in size like kangaroo and coyotes, rather coyotes can prey on kangaroo rats, etc.
