What Do Map Turtles Eat?

Writer Emily Cortez

Common map turtles are omnivores, which means they eat a variety of foods. Whenever possible, the feeding is done in the water. Because of their huge heads and powerful jaws, adult females consume significantly more prey than males. The female Common map turtles eat snails, clams, and crayfish, among other things. The male Common map turtles eat water insects, snails, and tiny crustaceans, while the females consume larger insects. Both have also been observed to consume dead fish as well as some plant stuff.

Animals and Insects

Swimmers eat their food while swimming, which is why they are called map turtles. Despite the fact that aquatic turtle pellets are an excellent staple meal for map turtles, they should also be provided with fresh, green vegetables or plants. Dark, leafy greens such as romaine lettuce, dandelion greens, and fresh parsley should be added to the water on a regular basis. Or you can add it to the side of the tank with a suction cup clip available in the fish department at your local supermarket. A small amount of fresh, chopped apple pieces and freeze-dried shrimp can be supplied as treats to your turtle, but they should not constitute a significant portion of his or her food.

In addition to insects, crabs, and fish, map turtles consume a variety of other animals for the meat portion of their diet. Instead, choose for larger, higher-protein food items such as shrimp or lobster instead of fatty fish like goldfish. Turtle pellets and fresh greens should comprise the majority of their food, which should be plant-based in nature as well.

For the purpose of preventing confined, non-foraging turtles from growing obese, the amount of food to feed should be what they are able to eat in less than six minutes. If you follow this routine, you should feed your Mississippi map turtle no more than three times per week at the most. Only feed them what they are likely to eat in less than two to three minutes; feed them during the morning or even afternoon, matching the times when they are most active on a regular basis. Common map turtles also eat fish, snails, and frog minnows.

Plants and Fruits

Common map turtles are carnivores, and they don’t eat plants or fruits.

How often do map turtles eat?

Young turtles will have larger appetites and should be fed on a daily basis as a result of this. Adult Mississippi maps can be fed four or five times per week, depending on their size.
