Eating Habits of Minks

Belonging to the weasel family, the minks are the small semiaquatic mammal in the animal kingdom. They have a super slender body with dark brown fur, allowing them to live in several habitats. Typically, they are found living close to riverbanks and other aquatic habitats. This is why; their diet mainly consists of fish and other aquatic creatures. These habitats provide a good number of food sources that they can feed on. After all, minks are carnivorous, meaning their diet consists of animals. Insects and Animals

Minks build their dens next to aquatic habitats mainly because they love to consume aquatic foods. They prey on a variety of fish and other small aquatic animals for their forage. Needless to say, minks eat fish, crawfish, and frogs. Minks are indeed carnivores and they hunt food sources consisting of meat. However, depending on the species, several types of minks also prefer vegetation and plants. Hence, minks eat plants and vegetables if they haven’t gotten other meaty sources. But this doesn’t mean that they would eat any grass, algae, or other plant matter!

What Minks Don’t Eat

Mink’s eating habits vary depending on the availability of the diet and the seasons. Just like other mammals, minks don’t necessarily eat everything that might be smaller than their size. It’s also because some of these food sources can turn out harmful for them. And, of course, most of them are the predators of minks. Minks don’t eat animals that have fur. Hence, minks don’t eat possums and raccoons. Reptiles like venomous snakes can be predators to minks. This is why minks don’t eat snakes. Besides, minks don’t eat corn, apples, berries, or other fruit. Those food items don’t make it to their diet, and that’s because of their carnivorous nature! Minks also don’t eat flies and caterpillars. Along with these, minks don’t eat dogs, foxes, owls, swans, and toads. Toads can be toxic for minks. On the other hand, foxes and owls are the predators of the minks.
