What Do Nudibranchs Eat? - Kylon Powell

Writer Emily Cortez

Nudibranchs are said to be carnivores. Nudibranchs eat algae, sponges, anemones, corals, barnacles, and even other nudibranchs as they lazily saunter about their habitat. They have two very sensitive tentacles, known as rhinophores, placed on the top of their heads that they use to identify prey. A nudibranch’s coloring comes from the food it consumes, which helps it to blend in with its surroundings. Some nudibranchs even retain the foul-tasting poisons of their meal and secrete them as a protection against predators.

Nudibranchs are hermaphrodites, which means they can mate with any other mature member of their species at the same time. Their life expectancy varies greatly, with some living less than a month and others living for up to a year or longer.

Animals and Plants

A toothed feature on their body called a radula is used to scrape prey from the rocks to which they cling. Some Nudibranchs suck out prey after pre-digesting its tissue with specific enzymes, similar to how wasps do. Because they are carnivorous, Nudibranchs will eat sponges, coral, anemones, hydroids, barnacles, fish eggs, sea slugs, and other nudibranchs, among other things. Nudibranchs are extremely fussy eaters, with certain species or genera of nudibranchs consuming only one type of prey at a time. The food that nudibranchs consume is responsible for their vibrant hues. It is possible that these colors are used for concealment or to alert predators to the presence of poison within the plant. Nudibranchs also eat crabs, zoas, and snails.

Plants and Fruits

Nudibranchs are carnivores and they don’t eat plants and fruits.

What nudibranchs don’t eat?

Berghia nudibranchs are non-venomous and will not damage corals or other invertebrates in the water. Nudibranchs will only consume aiptasia anemones and nothing else. In fact, they will not even eat Majano anemones, which are poisonous (a close cousin of the aiptasia).

How do nudibranchs eat?

The majority of Nudibranchs eat by scraping their meal off the rocks they cling to with their radula, a serrated device that can be equated to the tongue. Some suck out their prey after pre digesting its tissue with specific enzymes.
