What Do Red Wolves Eat?

Red wolves are carnivorous animals because they pursue and eat small mammals for their survival. They mostly eat rabbits, raccoons, deer’s and rodents such as mice and rabbits. Red wolves are native to the Southeastern United States, but they are critically endangered because fewer red wolves are left in the world. They can be found in eastern North Carolina’s Albemarle Peninsula. They are found in forests, bushlands, wetlands, and in swamps.

The average size of red wolves is about 4 feet long, and they can stand about 26inches high. Red wolves vary in size and weight, they can weigh between 45-80 pounds. Red wolves can live for six to seven years in the wild. They consume about 2-5 pounds of food per day. 

Insects and animals

Red wolves can eat different insects and animals. Red wolves eat rabbits, nutria, elk, and moose. Red wolves can eat the meat of different animals, snails, worms, bison, and different birds. Also, Red wolves can eat musk oxen, feral pigs, and squirrels. Red wolves also eat hares and beavers. Their diet always depends on the prey which they hunt, but they are most likely to eat small animals.

Red wolves eat all the time in a day and can eat about 2-5 pounds of meat, insects, and animals. Red wolves can live up to 12 days without eating.

Fruits and plants

Red wolves are carnivorous, and their diet consists of animals, but sometimes red wolves also eat plants and fruits. Red wolves can eat grass and fruits like berries, pears, apples, and peaches. Sometimes they also eat nonmeat foods.

What red wolves don’t eat

Red wolves don’t eat coyotes because they both are enemies and fight with each other, and coyotes are the predators of red wolves. Red wolves don’t attack or eat humans because they are afraid of them.
