Redfish are classified as omnivorous or carnivorous according to different species and what they eat. Some species eat only aquatic animals, and some eat both plants and aquatic animals. Redfish include several species and are basically used for rockfishes. Redfish can be found in the Gulf of Mexico from Florida to Northern Mexico and in the Atlantic Ocean. They live in backwater flats, oyster bars, open sounds, and in salt marsh rivers.

The average size of a redfish is 14 inches in length, but it can grow up to 28 inches. Their weight ranges from 4 pounds to 9 pounds. Their diet consists of mostly aquatic animals like shrimps, crabs, and small fishes.

Insects and aquatic animals

Redfish mostly eat bait fishes, crabs, and shrimps. Redfish can eat pinfish, squid, mullet, sand fleas, and croaker. Red Fishes also eat crawfish and cut bait. Redfish are more likely to eat crabs such as blue crabs and hermit crabs.

Redfish eat bluegill, fiddler crab, eels, and dead shrimps. They readily suck the dead shrimp. They attack frogs and eat them. At the deep sea, they eat trout and mud minnows. They hide behind oysters and search for food there. Redfish can eat shad, sardines, and whiting. Redfish also eat small insects like snails and slugs.

At night Redfish eat small minnows, shrimps, and different crustaceans like crabs. 

In summer, redfish eat invertebrates like worms, bivalves, different crabs, and gobies. Redfish love to eat shrimps and juvenile baitfish in summer.

In winter redfish can eat everything. Redfish can eat dead or alive animals, natural or plastic. Redfish eat finger mullet and bigger pinfish a lot. In winters they move downward in the ocean and lay beneath the trees.
