What Do Remoras Eat? - Kylon Powell
Gabriel Cooper
Remoras are the bottom feeder fishes and they are classified as omnivores because they feed on insects, small marine animals, and aquatic plants for their survival. Remoras are not parasites but they swim along with the sharks and give benefit to them by removing the parasites which are attached to the sharks.
Silky Terrier Dog Breed Playing Aro... Silky Terrier Dog Breed Playing AroundRemoras are found in the warm oceans and in tropical waters all around the world. They are mostly attached to bony fishes, big turtles, and sharks for their food. The remoras can even attach to the body of a diver but they don’t harm them.
The average size of remoras ranges from 30cm to 90cm. These are thin, elongated fishes. The remoras have an average weight of less than 2lb but some can exceed up to 2.4lb. The lifespan of a remora is still unknown.
Aquatic animals
Remoras mainly live with sharks, turtles, and other animals and eat food from them. They also eat parasites that are moving along with large animals. Remoras also feed on small crustaceans such as shrimps, crabs, and lobsters. At the bottom, they eat zooplankton and the remaining food of fish and fish flakes.
In captivity, mainly they don’t need any host for their food. They can feed on crustaceans and other feeds which a farmer gave to them. Some species of remoras also live in the mouths of the sharks and other large animals and eat bacteria there.
Aquatic plants
Remoras also eat small aquatic plants which are present at the bottom of the oceans. Remoras can eat phytoplankton and leafy green vegetables of the sea such as sea cucumber and sea lettuce. Remoras also eat micro plants in the ocean.
What remoras don’t eat?
Remoras don’t eat large aquatic animals because they remain and swim along with them for their food and they can’t eat them.
