Roof rats are said to be omnivorous because they can eat everything which they find. Roof rats like to eat fruits, plants, leaves, berries, nuts, snails, worms, etc. Roof rats are also known as house rats or black rats. They are abundant in tropical regions and in coastal states. Roof rats live in colonies and prefer lush landscapes, fruit trees, the upper part of buildings, and dense vegetation to live.

Roof rats vary in size, some are large and some are small. They vary between 6-40 cm in length. The average weight of a roof rat is 150-250 grams, but it can grow up to 340 grams.

Roof rats can eat everything like small insects. Roof rats can eat snails, slugs, and worms. Roof rats also eat small lizards and small birds. Additionally, Roof rats eat dead rats and dead matter of insects or animals. Roof rats eat bird eggs and birdseed. Sometimes Roof rats eat dog poop and mice. Roof rats also eat roaches and different bugs.

Fruits and vegetation

Roof rats can eat fruits and vegetables because they are tasty and contain nutrients and vitamins. Roof rats love to eat tomatoes, citrus fruits like lemons, grapefruits, avocados, acorns, pomegranate, plums, peanuts, and peanut butter. Also, Roof rats will eat apples, bananas, mangoes, pineapples, peaches, watermelon, kiwi, and grapes. Roof rats can eat lime, different flowers, plants, and their leaves. 

What roof rats don’t eat

Roof rats don’t eat wood, plastic, aluminum, soft metals, they only chew them and damage them to make a path where they can hide. Roof rats don’t eat venomous animals like scorpions. Also, Roof rats don’t eat olives. Roof rats don’t like the smell of naphthalene, eucalyptus oil, peppermint oil, and mothballs, so they don’t eat them and stay away from them.
