What Do Sea Otters Look Like?

Writer Rachel Davis

Sea otters are among the dangerous marine mammals. They have a blunt head, round black eyes, and ears almost hidden in their furs. They belong to the Mustelidae (Weasel) family, which is the family of carnivore marine mammals. Sea otters are the largest member of the Weasel family.

Sea otters, well known as strong swimmers, are found along the coasts of the Pacific Ocean in North America and Asia. They feed on usually hard-shelled invertebrates such as sea urchins, snails, crabs, etc., by smashing their shells and eating soft parts of their prey.

What Sea Otters Look Like?

Sea otters are one of the most intelligent and aggressive vertebrates. They have long, giant bodies and four relatively short yet powerful limbs that help them swim, walk and manipulate prey. They grow up to a maximum of 4.5 feet and weigh up to 45kg (100 pounds). They have good vision above and below the water, can hear very well, and have a good sense of smell.

They have a very muscular tail that helps them steer and swim with a maximum of sharp 36 teeth in their mouth for crushing the shell of their prey. They have greyish to almost black bodies, but the throat, head, and chest are lighter in color than the rest.

With larger ribcages, flexible bodies, and sharp claws, the sea otter has the densest fur of any animal. They have two layers of dark-colored and tremendously dense fur, more than a million hair follicles per square inch. The outer guard hairs are around 1/2inches long and underneath hairs are 1/4 inches long, also known as waterproof furs that make it extremely hard for water to contact sea otter’s skin.
