Sheepshead is said to be omnivorous because its diet consists of invertebrates, vertebrates, and some plants. Sheepshead is a marine fish that can grow up to 76cm, but normally they are 30-50 cm in size. The average weight of sheepshead is 1.4 to 1.8 kg. Sheepshead is found in Florida and along the Atlantic coast of North America.

Some of their species are also found in Mexico and Rio de Janeiro. They love to live in coastal areas around rock pilings, tidal creeks, etc. They always prefer coastal areas to live but they also live in saltwater. Small sheepshead eats different invertebrates and plants, but the large sheepshead eats crustaceans, oysters, clams, and different other aquatic animals. During the spawning season, sheepshead preferred to move towards sandy regions. 

Insects and animals

Sheepshead can eat different aquatic animals and insects. Sheepshead is a large fish, and it eats a lot. Sheepshead can eat zebra mussels, and they love to eat zebra mussels. Sheepshead can eat sand fleas, squid, mollusks, crustaceans, etc. Sheepshead can eat different shrimps, barnacles, clams, and frozen shrimps. Frozen shrimps are not as nutritious as live shrimps. Sheepshead can eat blue crabs, fiddler crabs, oysters, and small fish.

At the bottom, they mainly live on crustaceans. Sheepshead also eats some isopods and nematodes. Sheepshead love to eat hard-bodied sea animals. They also eat lobsters.

Plants and vegetation

Sheepsheads, along with vertebrates and invertebrates also eat some plants and algae. Sheepshead can eat everything which they find in the water. Algae and some plants also make up some portion of their diet. 

What sheepsheads don’t eat

Sheepsheads eat almost everything which they found in water and which is smaller in size than them. Sheepshead doesn’t eat large aquatic animals and dead vertebrates and invertebrates. They can eat them only when they are freshly dead. Sheepshead doesn’t eat at night. At night they move towards the bottom of the water and rest there. They don’t eat.
