Smallmouth bass, like its larger sibling the largemouth bass, is opportunistic feeders that take advantage of any situation. In many cases, their nutrition is influenced by the environment in which they are situated.
Smallmouth bass feeds heavily on crayfish, tiny fish, aquatic insects, and other invertebrates when they are in chilly waters. Smallmouth bass has been found to modify their diets seasonally, mostly ingesting crayfish for the majority of the season but devouring bigger quantities of fish in the late summer and early fall, according to research.
Fish such as crayfish, aquatic insects, and other invertebrates that hide behind rocks and stones are preyed upon by smallmouth bass, which is commonly found near rocky bottoms, pools, and shaded areas.
Smallmouth bass is also known to feast on small fish that reside among rocks, such as sculpins and darters, which are common prey for the species. Smallmouth bass feed on developing flies during the summer insect hatching season.
Fishing for smallmouth bass is most active throughout the daytime hours, with the biggest concentrations occurring between dawn and twilight. During the warm months, they do eat at night, but only when it is cool.
During the Winter months, smallmouth bass does not consume much food, but a dying threadfin shad drifting by can be very appealing. Amphibians, such as lizards and frogs, are known to be preyed upon by smallmouth bass, among other things.
