What Do Sockeye Salmon Eat?

Sockeye salmon are also referred as red salmon and they are omnivores because they feed on plants and small fishes in the ocean for their survival. Sockeye salmon is the smallest species in the Pacific. Sockeye salmon are considered better salmon than the normal one because it contains more proteins and nutrients.

Sockeye salmon come from the Western coast of North America and the northern Pacific Ocean. They are also found in Canada and in Northern California and northern Alaska. They are adaptive to habitats such as rivers, streams, and lakes. They prefer to live in freshwater habitats.

The average size of a sockeye salmon is about 1.5 feet to 2.5 feet in length and the average weight is about 4 to 15 pounds. Sockeye salmon remain in their natal habitat for three years and then move out of the sea.

Aquatic animals

Sockeye salmon feed on different aquatic animals and insects. Sockeye salmon mainly eat zooplankton, and it’s their favorite food. Sockeye salmon will eat small crustaceans such as amphipods, copepods, shrimps, etc. Sockeye salmon eat adult small fishes and their larvae. Sockeye salmon eat some aquatic insects and insect larvae such as worms, snails, etc. Sockeye salmon also eat squids and krill.

In the ocean, sockeye salmon eat zooplankton, shrimps, and small fish. 

Aquatic plants

Sockeye salmon also feed on aquatic plants such as phytoplankton and the small plants which are present at the bottom of the ocean. They also feed on sea vegetation such as sea lettuce, seaweed, and seagrass.

In captivity, sockeye salmon mainly eat shrimps, herring, zooplankton, and many other small fishes. 

What sockeye salmon don’t eat?

Sockeye salmon don’t eat jellyfish and large fishes in the ocean. Sockeye salmon don’t eat large crustaceans, sharks, and dolphins. Also, Sockeye salmon don’t eat aquatic mammals like sea snakes, toads, and sea birds.
