What Do Swallows Eat? - Kylon Powell

Writer Sarah Silva

Swallows are one of the few birds who travel the whole world almost every year without any break. They live in every continent of the world. They are also known as “Migrators” because they love to migrate. Or you can say that they cannot live in any specific place for a longer time.

Like many other small birds, swallows are also omnivores. Because they can eat plants, insects, and many minor and harmful bugs. They don’t care about food so much that they can eat anything that comes their way and that is smaller in size because they are afraid of larger birds like eagles and vultures. So, let’s see what they exactly eat and what they do not eat:

Which Insects Do Swallows Eat?

Swallows are not that fussy about the food they eat but swallow devour insects. And flying insects are a significant part of their diet. Swallows love to eat bugs, insects, mosquitos, wasps, bees, dragonflies, flies, carpenter bees, flying ants, crickets, caterpillars, deer flies, and grasshoppers. Additionally, Swallows eat gnats, houseflies, Japanese beetles, yellow jackets (as they are also wasps), mealworms, mayflies, spiders, midges, snails, worms and termites. Swallows also don’t eat cicadas but not much.

What Other Things Do Swallows Eat?

Swallows can also eat bird seeds, other seeds, and strawberries (but in winters). Unmated male barn swallows usually kill and eat other baby birds but not adult birds. Only 1% of Swallows eat other birds’ eggs. Swallows also eat at bird feeders but not much.

What Do Swallows Eat in the Wild?

They found so much food in the wild because they love to eat insects and especially flying insects that are in excess in the wild.

What Do Swallows Eat While Flying?

As Swallows love to eat flying insects, they eat flying insects while flying. And 99 percent of the diet is flying or other insects.

What Do Swallows Not Eat?

Swallows are not picky in food, but Swallows still do not eat bluebird eggs, corns, fishes, gypsy moths, hummingbirds, monarch butterflies, minnows, mice, slugs, ticks, tadpoles, and most water bugs.
