What do tegus eat?
Tegus are omnivores, which means they eat both plants and animals based on their preferences. They aren’t picky eaters and will consume a wide variety of different meals. This is what is known as a generalist feeding habit. As they grow in size, tegus will eat more eggs, quail eggs, tiny birds, and even small animals, beef, bread, beef, lamb, liver, bones, celery, eggshells, egg yolk, ground beef, ground chicken, among other things. Tegus can eat peanut butter, cat and dog food, and also hot dogs but once in a while.
The majority of human engagement with these lizards is through the pet trade. Tegus can be very docile and amiable as house pets if they are handled on a regular basis. Because they reproduce successfully in captivity, we do not catch large numbers of these creatures for the pet trade because they are not profitable. According to the most recent information, their wild population is stable, and we have not threatened extinction.
Despite the fact that humans have successfully bred tegu lizards in captivity, they have in no way domesticated them. They are still considered to be wild animals.
