Tokay geckos are classified as carnivores or insectivores because they mainly eat insects for their survival. Although Tokay geckos are carnivorous, occasionally they eat vegetation in captivity. Tokay geckos are aggressive and territorial. They can inflict a strong bite and can cause disease in people.

Tokay geckos are found in southeast and south Asia. Their main regions are Nepal, India, West Bengal, Bhutan, New Guinea, and Bangladesh. Tokay geckos are found in a variety of habitats such as in tropical rainforests, Rocky Mountains, and submontane and lowland forests. They also live in man-made environments with a variety of microhabitats. 

The average size of a Tokay gecko male is about 13 to 16 inches in length and the average female length is about 8 to 12 inches in length. Males are slightly larger than females. Their average weight ranges between 5 to 14 oz. Tokay geckos can live up to 10 years. 

Insects and arthropods

Tokay geckos feed on a variety of insects. They primarily eat grasshoppers, locusts, moths, beetles, termites, and spiders. They are more likely to eat crickets. They also feed on cockroaches, mosquitoes, small rats, and Insects. Tokay geckos also eat mealworms, wax worms, and mice. Tokay geckos may eat small birds and pinky mice because it contains lots of proteins, fats, and calcium.

Adult Tokay geckos eat every other day while juvenile Tokay geckos eat after every 24 hours. Mainly their diet is based on size and age. In the wild, Tokay geckos mostly eat invertebrates and small rodents. Tokay geckos often drink water from moisture droplets. In captivity, Tokay geckos eat hornworms, silkworms, wax worms, crickets, mealworms, roaches, small mice, etc.

Fruits and plants

Tokay geckos normally don’t eat fruits and vegetables. However, in captivity, Tokay geckos eat fruits like papaya, bananas, berries, and grapes. Tokay geckos also eat fruit-based food such as Pangea and they also feed on repashy.
