Hawaii’s Black Triggerfish (Melichthys niger) is an omnivore that can be fed a varied diet that includes both carnivore foods such as shrimp and squid as well as herbivore foods such as marine algae and vitamin-enriched herbivore foods. When kept in an aquarium with other triggerfish of the same species, this triggerfish will usually do well.

The titan triggerfish is not exclusively a piscivore, despite the fact that it will occasionally consume smaller fish. Triggerfish will eat echinoderms, crustaceans, mollusks, tube worms, and living coral, among other things. However, despite the fact that they will consume soft-bodied animals such as tunicates, they are specialized feeders on hard-shelled species.
Titan triggerfish are known to eat a variety of tube worms and branching corals, such as Acropora. The titan triggerfish utilizes its powerful bite to break portions off and crush them in order to remove the meat from the prey. They are frequently observed in this manner while “grazing” on the reef.
While working the bottom, shifting sand, boulders, and coral debris in the search for crabs and other crustaceans as well as mollusks is the most prevalent feeding approach used by these creatures. All univalve and bivalve animals, with the exception of the largest and thickest-shelled specimens, will be easily crushed and consumed. Triggerfish also eat coral, clownfish, anemones, lionfish, starfish, shrimp snails, hermit and crabs.
Plants and Fruits
Triggerfish are omnivores and they can eat anything that they can find on the ocean bed.

It is advised that all triggerfish species be fed on a regular basis. As a bonus, feeding your triggerfish on a regular basis minimizes the likelihood that it will “bother” any of its tankmates. A healthy diet consisting of meaty items such as prawns and chopped squid, as well as algae-based frozen cubes, should be fed 2-3 times daily with a proper healthy diet.
