Water beetles are classified as carnivorous because they feed on insects, other aquatic beetles, and even fishes for their survival. Some water beetles are herbivores, and they only eat aquatic vegetation for their nutrition, and some are omnivores. Water beetles are harmful to humans, but their bite is painful, and it doesn’t cause any allergy and infection.

Water beetles range in length from several centimeters to 4 cm in length. The adult water beetle weighs between 10 to 30 grams. A water beetle can live up to 3 years.
Insects and aquatic animals
Aquatic water beetles prey on many aquatic species. Water beetles eat dragonflies and their larvae, water bugs, amphipods, mosquito larvae, water fleas, etc. Water beetles also eat snails, crustaceans and sometimes they also eat carrion. Water beetles also eat worms such as mealworms, wax worms, and tadpoles. Water beetles will eat the flesh of different aquatic animals.
In captivity, water beetles eat insects, worms, and sometimes small fishes. Water beetles don’t remain active at night, and they don’t feed in night hours.
Aquatic vegetation
Water beetles are herbivores that mainly eat different aquatic plants. Water beetles eat algae such as green algae, hair algae, detritus, seaweed, etc. Water beetles also eat aquatic vegetation like sea lettuce and the leaves of many other plants. Water beetles also suck juices from the stem of plants. Water beetles live in wet areas and mainly remain on the ground and also feed on mosses and seagrass.
What water beetles don’t eat?
Water beetles don’t eat frogs and large fishes. Water beetles don’t eat birds and large sea snakes.
