The majority of water turtles are omnivores, which means that they consume plants, insects, eggs, and a variety of other insects throughout their lives. Some water turtle species, however, begin their lives as omnivores as hatchlings and subsequently transition to being either pure herbivores or carnivores as they mature, depending on the variety of turtle in question.

What a water turtle eats is determined by its species — especially, the type of jaw it has for chewing food, the environment in which it lives, and the food sources that are readily available. Water turtles eat a variety of foods, including algae, sponges, squid, shrimp, crabs, jellyfish, and seagrasses. Water turtles also sometimes eat gravel and rocks mistaking it for food. Animals and Insects

Water turtles diet mainly consists of small animals and insects since they are omnivores. Water turtles eat fish, Killifish, guppies, mosquitofish, platies, bluegills, bass, and crappies. Water turtles also eat seagrasses, algae, tadpoles, snails, worms, cricket, sponges, sea squirts, squid, shrimp, crabs, jellyfish, and cuttlefish. In captivity, water turtles diet mainly include insects and they don’t a lot.

Fruits and Vegetables

The majority of adult water turtles prefer to eat vegetables. Leafy greens, for instance, are a nice example. Because lettuce contains a lot of water, it is not particularly nutritious, but it does include some vitamins and minerals that Water turtles also eat apples, pears, bananas, grapes, pumpkins, peaches, pineapples, kiwis, and melons.  Additionally, water turtles love to eat figs, papaya, raspberries, and strawberries.

What water turtles don’t eat?

Some water turtles are carnivores, while others consume only plant-based foods on a daily basis. The majority of water turtles, on the other hand, are omnivores, meaning they eat both animals and vegetation. Water turtles don’t eat bread, dogs, dog food, or cat food.
