What is a reed valve?

Writer Andrew Davis

Reed valves are a type of check valve that restricts fluid flow to a single direction and opens and closes as the pressure on each face changes.

What is a reed valve and how does it work?

In a two-stroke engine, the reed valve regulates the intake of fresh gas into the crankcase and/or combustion chamber. The reed valve is thus an important component for the bike’s performance: in a two-stroke engine, the fuel supply determines the power and torque output values.

Are there reed valves on all two-strokes?

Reed valves aren’t used in all two-stroke engines, so it’s important to know if you have them. If it dumps into the crankcase like the diametrically opposite cylinder, the reed valve is most likely present.

What are the benefits of Reeds?

Reed valves, also known as reed petals, are commonly found in high-performance two-stroke racing engines. They help control the flow of the fuel/air mixture as it is pumped from the intake tract to the combustion chamber, improving the engine’s fuel efficiency.

Is it true that reed valves make a difference?

High-rpm engines benefit from more rigid reed valves because they avoid resonance and avoid fuel play from the crankshaft by returning more easily to their starting position.

Do reed valves have an impact on compression?

In 2-cycle engines, the reed valve has no effect on cylinder compression. It will, however, have an impact on the crankcase pumping action. If the reed valve fails, the fuel/air charge will not be drawn in and compressed effectively in the crankcase.

Is it possible to run a two-stroke without a reed valve?

They won’t be able to run without reeds. Backfiring through the carburetor is extremely unlikely unless there was something in the cylinder, such as a glowing piece of carbon, that ignited the fuel/air charge before the piston closed the intake port. You should be able to reuse the reed block gasket without any problems.
