To connect your home’s main sewer line to a public water system, you’ll need to install a sewer tap in your home. In order to prevent any water from leaking into the ground, they must form a tight seal.

How does sewer line connect to main?

A lateral is the sewer pipe that, in a typical installation, connects a home to the municipal branch or main sewer line under the street. An appropriately prepared and sloped trench typically contains a 4-inch pipe that is buried below the frost line.

Do you need permission to connect to a sewer?

Before you can hook up, you need to get permission to dump waste into the public sewer.

What is the purpose of a sewer line?

The sewer line is a single pipe that carries all of your waste from your home to the main sewer beneath the street. The pipe is buried a few feet beneath the ground in your front yard (below the frost line).

Can you put a 90 in a sewer line?

Having a 90-degree bend at the bottom of a vertical drainage stack where the wastewater begins to flow horizontally is acceptable. For kitchen, vanity, or laundry sinks, it’s a good idea to have a sweep 90-degree fitting where the drain pipe comes out of the wall.

What is a PVC saddle tee used for?

In place of cutting into the PVC pipe to install a traditional three-ended tee fitting, PVC saddles and tees, also referred to as snap tees, can be used to create tee fittings for any rigid PVC pipe.

Who is responsible for sewer pipes?

It used to be that property owners were responsible for maintaining their own sewers and lateral drains; however, as of 2011, new Government legislation mandates that local water companies maintain these facilities.

How deep should sewer pipe be buried?

At least 12-24 inches deep and wide enough to fit your pipe before filling it in with soil and sod are recommended for trenches. As previously mentioned, if you live in a cold climate, you’ll need a deeper pit to prevent sewage from freezing.

Can I connect rainwater to sewer?

Water from the rain gutters should not be used to flush out sewage. There is a risk of flooding when rainwater gutters and gullies are connected directly to the wastewater drain.

Can you move a manhole yourself?

The manhole cannot be “moved” because it will be located where the drainage pipe changes direction and was probably an external manhole before the extension was built.

Can I connect surface water to sewer?

Unless you have access to both a foul and a surface water sewer, you’ll need two separate connections. A combined connection application requires that you provide evidence that there are no alternatives. A soakaway is the most popular choice for surface water drainage.
