Popcorn might be a good idea as you wait to get your wisdom teeth out, but it isn’t recommended immediately before or after you receive anesthesia. The reason for this is that the kernels can end up blocking the opening of your airway and hindering proper breathing during general anesthesia. Also, popcorn is not one of the soft foods that your dentist may recommend eating during the immediate post-operative phase once you are fully awake.
Popcorn during the healing process
Although you should avoid eating popcorn soon before or after your wisdom teeth removal, it is okay to indulge in this snack while you are healing. If you can chew without creating excess pressure on surrounding teeth and if you don’t have any pain from your extraction, enjoy this snack!
Remember, however, to avoid popcorn during the first 48 hours after surgery. The reason for this is that during this time, blood vessels are very close to the surface of the surgical site and might break easily with additional pressure.
1-month post-op or later
By the time you are about one month past your surgery, popcorn is an excellent snack to eat. Popcorn can be made easily with hot air poppers that are readily available in most grocery stores or by using a stovetop popper that you may already have at home.
Basically, you are free to consume popcorn for between one month and several months after surgery if you can chew without excess pressure on your surrounding teeth. Avoid it immediately before or after anesthesia is administered. Popcorn is great because it is nutritious, affordable, and easy to make!
