John Campbell

If you’ve ever seen a lizard sunbathing on a rocky ledge, you probably wondered why they don’t get overheated in the midday sun. The answer is their unique way of staying cool! Lizards beat their legs rapidly—tens of times per second—to circulate blood to bring much-needed heat to the surface of their skin. While this makes them hot, it also helps them lose body heat through their skin as they perform what’s known as “lunging.” They can also change their colors, or flick out an ear to listen for predators. (They use both methods to catch mice.) Sometimes lizards find themselves in harsh environments where they don’t have enough food or water and must migrate to find more suitable living conditions.
Lizards have spent a long time working out ways to hunt, escape predators and find suitable habitats. Here are five interesting facts about lizards that you might not know:
1. Lizards use several methods of communication, including complex body language and even some forms of scent marking.
2. They use their color as camouflage, to attract mates and as a warning to other males who might want to steal their females.
3. Male lizards can fight over females by slashing at each other with their sharp claws and biting each other hard enough to hurt.
4. Lizard eggs are actually small enough to be incubated in your hand—doesn’t that sound like an interesting project you could try at home?
5. If a male lizard is separated from his family, he must try to find another one by himself or risk death by predators or starvation. Whether solitary or living in groups, lizards are interesting creatures!
