Where do sparrows sleep? - Kylon Powell

Writer Rachel Davis

Many people ask the question of where sparrows sleep. The answer is actually very interesting. Sparrows sleep in a bed that is made out of straws. It’s kind of like an all-inclusive hotel for them. They build these beds by making little holes in well-populated areas on trees and other outside walls, which creates a small hole for them to fit perfectly in it. The sparrow normally will move up and down the tree until he feels like it’s the right size, then he’ll pile up his straws and create his perfect little nest to reside in during his sleeping hours.

Sparrows are friendly little birds who like to perch on roofs and walls. Their nests are built on warm, slanted roofs, and inside drywalls. Sparrows can be found in town and country – in all kinds of places from parks and gardens to city streets, from beaches to woodland edges and hedgerows.

You can find sparrows sleeping in small colonies often with their nests close together and hidden away. Sparrows sleep on or around the ground but you will rarely see them on the ground because they normally sleep in dense bushes or piles of leaves. If a sparrow is nearby you can hear them ruffling about. They usually make a quick rustle before settling to sleep. The distinctive song of the sparrow has a clear rhythm and variety of pitches that may be either continued or repeated notes, often rising and falling, called trilling. Sparrows sleep with both their feet facing the same direction and tucked under their belly and chest feathers to keep them warm. They will stay in this position while they are sleeping even if they are only resting quietly.

Warm, slanted roofs and dry blank walls are perfect for sparrows. Sparrows can be found in town and country–in all kinds of places, from parks and gardens to city streets, from beaches to woodland edges and hedgerows. Get along with the neighbors by making your roof a good place for them to shelter.
