Writer Sarah Silva

Wasp sleep in nests which they build their nests in warm, dry places. They like cavities under eaves, attics, and wall spaces. They prefer to build near the ground: under porches, steps, decks, and low-hanging branches of trees. More than 80% of wasp stings occur when a person has unknowingly stepped on or near a wasp’s nest.

Wasps are social insects and live together in large communities in a nest built by the workers. Each nest is made of many hexagonal cells made of paper. These nests can be found in different places, depending on the species and habitat, such as under a leaf, rock, or in-wall crevices. The queen wasp lays eggs in each cell and once they hatch the grubs are fed by worker wasps who regurgitate food through their mouths directly into the cell.

Wasps build paper nests and hibernate during cold periods. Where do wasps sleep? For most of us, the first thought might be wild areas away from people. But wasps actually have a wide range of habitats. A few species even nest indoors in the winter with their human hosts! The diversity in where they sleep is Overwintering wasps do not live in a nest! Even though they eat, drink & sleep in the same location all winter, wasps do not “live” there. In most cases, these wasps will have completed their nest before winter sets in & then start to hibernate for the cold months ahead. This means that during the winter, wasps will not be destroying your home or killing your plants.

Facts about wasps: Wasps can range from very small to very large. They have a thick “wasp waist”, basically a narrow part of their body, distinguishing them from bees.-They can sting repeatedly (most times just the females) and usually will only sting if disturbed or threatened. Wasps’ nests can be found in attics, under decks, or in wall voids of buildings. They can be built on top of walls or underneath porches or decks made of wood, brick, or asphalt. Nests are also found in the ground in undisturbed areas such as tall grass, under rocks and boards, and rotting logs.
