Where to dispose of chain link fence?

Writer Robert King

If you own a chain link fence and you want to get rid of it, you should not dispose of the fence into your home garbage unless your city or town is hosting a bulky item collection day and has agreed to take care of the chain-link fencing.

Bring the chain-link bundle to your local recycling center for residential use. Make contact with the local recycling center to determine what dimensions that your bundle should have. For instance, some recycling centers have limitations on how large your chain link roll is allowed to be.

If your local community doesn’t reuse chain-link fences, you can take the fence to the local recycling center. If you need to dispose of the chain-link fence on your own, you can take it to the local community recycling center or a landfill after dismantling it. Then, put it in a proper bundle.

You could also offer the chain links, typically made of galvanized steel, or another type of aluminum that is scrap metal. Aluminum pieces are typically sold for approximately 50 cents per pound as ferrous (iron contain) pieces can fetch about 10 % per pound.

  1. Before you start the removal process, there are some things to consider. First, ensure you have enough space on the other end of your fence so that it can be laid on the ground and at least two feet to roll it. It’s likely to require more than three feet for rolling the chain link and taking it off the fence while you work. Be sure to tie it up or cut the required plants in close proximity to the fence to make it easier to access.
  2. Make sure you leave enough space for a wheelbarrow, or truck to place the chain link inside. Fences that are rolled up can be heavy and cumbersome to transport by themselves.
  3. Take the clamps off the corner or end post and begin. They are typically connected with bolts or nuts. Once the bolt or nut is removed, you can take off the tension bar and put it away.
