The name originated as an abbreviation for Scientifically treated Petroleum. The brand is managed by Energizer Holdings since November of 2018. The three businessmen Charles Dwight (Doc) Liggett, Jim Hill, and Robert De Hart, started Chemical Compounds in 1953 with the aid of a budget of $3,000 to begin their business with their headquarters in Saint Joseph, Missouri. “Scientifically processed petroleum” is the title they gave to their only products, STP Oil Treatment.

They acquired the company in 1991. Studebaker-Packard Company acquired the company in the year 1991. Studebaker briefly integrated STP in its marketing in the form of an abbreviation for “Studebaker Tested Products”. But, the STP’s CEO, Sherwood Egbert felt that STP could eventually surpass its parent company and hired Andy Granatelli as STP’s STP’s chief executive for STP to improve the image of the product.

At the same time, Granatelli became the public face of STP who was often seen in white suits emblazoned by the oval red STP logo, and attending races and handing out many thousands of weatherproof STP stickers. Granatelli also ran two Novi specials during the 1964 Indianapolis 500. The drivers of the race were Jim Hurtubise and Bobby Unser… In the film, the focus is on the Novis, who are the main characters. Sales of Studebaker-Worthington products continued to rise after Studebaker-Worthington ceased auto production in 1966, and the company was spun off as a separate public company in 1969. In the year 1976, it was purchased from Esmark which was acquired in 1984 by Beatrice Foods 1984.

Beatrice had to sell STP the following year to Union Carbide the following year. In 1986, Union Carbide’s auto-related products that included Prestone as well as Simoniz were the subject of a leveraged buyout. The resultant business, First Brands, was bought in 1998 by Clorox 1998. In the autumn of the year 2006, STP Fuel additives started to be added to the Marathon gasoline, which is likely to be competitive with Chevron’s Techron additive. Avista Capital Partners purchased Clorox’s ArmorAll and STP businesses in 2010 and sold them to Avista. Armored AutoGroup was the company’s final name. Spectrum Brands acquired Armored AutoGroup in April of that year. Energizer bought Spectrum’s auto-care products (including Armor All as well as A/C Pro) for $1.25 billion in cash and shares.
