Why Does My Baby Squirrel Have Diarrhea?
Emily Cortez
If it’s watery, your baby squirrel has diarrhea. For a couple of feedings, dilute the formula with water (approximately 1/2 water, 1/2 formula), then continue with a full-strength formula. It’s possible that the baby was a little dehydrated. Overfeeding is another cause of watery stools.

Squirrels and rats both generate dark brown, smooth feces, but squirrels make larger barrel-shaped pellets, whilst rats produce small, oblong-shaped droppings with tapering ends. Before you touch it, take a look. The way a squirrel sits, its alertness, and traces of blood or diarrhea in the box can all tell you whether there’s a problem that needs to be addressed right away.
Kale, broccoli, apples, grapes, sweet potato, hard-shelled nuts out of the shell, and a high-quality rat diet are examples of these foods. Until your squirrel is around 9-10 weeks old, he or she will be fed formula. Do not overfeed or increase the amount of food you eat too rapidly! If you allow it, baby squirrels may overheat and develop diarrhea or bloating, which can be fatal. Every day at the same time, weigh the infant to see if they are growing or losing weight and modify the formula dosage as needed. Pedialyte and puppy milk is essential for the growth of baby squirrels.
A newborn squirrel will cling to you as its “mother” if you feed it with a bottle. To get newborn squirrels to pee, keep them warm and rub their genitals. A chilled young squirrel should not be fed. This will result in death. Place the infant in a small box lined with warm, odorless textiles like t-shirts or fleece. Use a terry cloth or other materials that are loopy or can readily become thread-like to keep your feet and nails from becoming entangled.
