Stress is one of the main reasons as to why your friend is acting different. If you notice subtle changes in behavior and interactions, then this can be because of stress that’s affecting your friend’s life. Stress can cause people to become distant and to act in a way that would not consider  to be their usual self. So, this is one possibility that certainly cannot be ruled out.

Financial issues can result in changes in behavior and mindset. When people have money issues they’re not going to be their usual self, this kind of thing can cause your friend to worry a lot and to be busy with figuring out how to make more money.

If you guys have been growing apart, then that can lead to differences that you notice between you and your friend. Sometimes friendships fade and dissolve overtime. It might not happen right away, but overtime you can notice the differences in the friendship.

No matter what the issue that you and your friend have, the best thing to do is to find a solution so that you guys can be on the same page.

Your friend needs to let you know their  feelings as well as the thoughts that they’re thinking to help you better understand things. If not, you will never know what’s going on.
