Why is my gas fireplace fogging up?
John Campbell
Gas fireplaces come in many styles and options. A gas insert can be used in a wood-burning fireplace. Gas fireplaces are available in new construction.

Silky Terrier Dog Breed Playing AroundThe main reason moisture forms inside your fireplace insert, gas fireplace, or free-standing gas stove is because of temperature differences. The temperature inside the fireplace would be similar to the room temperature. The temperature inside the firebox will change very quickly when the fireplace is turned on.
The fireplace’s heat warms the air from the gas flames. Warmer air retains more moisture than cool air. Water vapor is one by-product of combustion, as we have discussed elsewhere. Condensation forms when the warm air and the cooler glass surfaces come in contact with water vapor. The glass will clear as it heats up and the steel, firebrick, and logs inside the fireplace heat up.
On initial start-up, you will notice gas flames that appear a little too blue. The glass will begin to clear once the flames start to yellow up, usually after about 5 minutes.
Something is problematic if there is a foggy, white coating on the interior of the glass. Sulfur and other by-products of the combustion process can build up on the glass. If this is not addressed, it can form an acidic, white film. This must be removed. For directions on how to separate the glass from your gas appliance, see your owner’s manual. There will be variations in the latching and sealing mechanism from one model to another. For assistance in removing or cleaning the glass, contact your WE LOVE FIRE specialist.
CLEANING OPTIONS
If the condensation is very heavy, you might notice watermarks on the inside of your glass. You can clean these water lines and the white hazy film easily. You will need a gas appliance cleaner. This cleaner, which costs around $10.00 per bottle, is a thick creamy paste-like polish that cleans the glass of your fireplace, stove, or inserts.
Black soot deposits on the glass’s interior can indicate an issue with the combustion air. A qualified technician should make the necessary technical adjustments. You can easily clean the soot with the same gas appliance cleaner polish.
