So, Are Chameleons Nocturnal?

Why Are Chameleons Not Nocturnal?

The term “Diurnal” is used for animals that remain awake during the day and sleep at night. It is the opposite of nocturnal. Humans tend to be diurnal. However, we can still manipulate our sleeping patterns to work a night shift or engage in late-night activities such as clubbing or gaming. However, chameleons cannot adopt the change. Therefore, chameleons would naturally go to sleep during the night and wake up once the sun rises. Their ability to fall asleep after sunset allows them to live in the wild. The following reasons explain why chameleons are not nocturnal.

1. Vision

Chameleons are known for their amazing eyesight. There are two individual cameras in their eyes which feature lenses that enhance their focus for faraway objects. It is the same as the focus function on our smartphones and digital cameras. This means that a chameleon would be able to focus on what it sees. In fact, it can even look in two completely different directions at the same time without having to turn its head. The reason behind this is that its eyes work independently. Thus, they get a panoramic view. Their excellent eyesight is accredited to evolution. Since chameleons are slow-moving reptiles, they have to scout for both food sources and dangers. Their eyes would not be useful during the night.

2. Prey

Next, chameleons need to eat other animals to survive. As most insects are only out during the daytime, it is the perfect time for them to eat. Insects such as dragonflies and grasshoppers are eaten by them. On the other hand, if the chameleon had been nocturnal, it would be unable to eat these insects.

3. Camouflage

Chameleons are masters of camouflage. Their ability works perfectly during the day and allows them to adapt to every background in order to avoid predators. Chameleons have nanocrystals on their skin which allows them to change the wavelength of light to hide in plain sight.

4. Temperature

Finally, chameleons are cold-blooded just like any other reptile which means that they have to lounge in the sun for an extended period of time to get warm enough. It would be impossible for them to get heat during the night.
