Acupuncture can cause adverse health effects but there is no known evidence of whether they are directly involved in blood clots. The adverse effects include infection, Pseudo anemia, Blood Stasis, Blood Clotting, and Spontaneous Ecchymosis.

Pseudo anemia is a well-known side effect of acupuncture that occurs in needle puncture sites that often results in the formation of hematoma which is blood clots. Pseudo anemia can also cause by direct injury to the veins and arteries. Blood stasis is a side effect of acupuncture that occurs when there is no blood flow within the vessel which can form a blood clot.

Blood clotting is another known side effect of acupuncture where there are clots like formations in your veins or arteries that can lead to heart attack or stroke. Spontaneous Ecchymosis is a side effect of acupuncture that causes skin redness, swelling, and skin discoloration after needle puncture using an acupuncture needle. This condition usually occurs when you have blood vessel disorder or blood clotting problems.

However, I should note that there’s no existing evidence that directly supports that adverse blood clots can happen because of acupuncture.

When using acupuncture, the practitioner uses thin needles to puncture your skin which is supposed to control pain or treat disease. Why use needles? Acupuncture practitioners believe that they can stimulate different nerves and muscles through these needle punctures.
