Can Acupuncture Help with Melasma Due to Hormonal Imbalance?
John Campbell
Melasma is one of the most common pigmentary disorders. It affects people from all age groups and occurs due to a number of factors including genetics, skin type, sun exposure, and hormones. A study published in the ‘Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology investigated how acupuncture can be used to treat the hormonal component in this condition.

The Process of Acupuncture in Melasma Treatment
Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese treatment that involves stimulating specific points on the body using needles. It is particularly useful when treating pain but may also have effects on systemic conditions such as hormone-related disorders. In this case study, researchers stimulated the acupuncture point Jinmen (CV4) in 14 patients over a period of 8 weeks. Afterward, their skin was examined for signs of optimal stimulation. This process was then repeated several times until there were satisfactory results meaning that there had been a 50% reduction in pigmentation or improvement in skin texture and.

The Outcomes of Acupuncture Use on Melasma
The patients involved in the treatment were followed up for a period of 4 months and their skin was examined at three stages; before treatment, after 8 weeks of therapy, and following a further 4-month follow-up. The results showed that overall there was a statistically significant reduction in pigmentation levels across all participants. In some cases, improvement occurred as soon as four weeks into the therapy but the best results were achieved once 8 weeks had been completed. Furthermore, even though many patients continued to improve beyond this point, it is likely that such improvements would have been maintained if they could have repeated the therapy again.
