Can Bees Hear? - Kylon Powell

Writer Gabriel Cooper

The antennae and sensitive body hair of bees, in contrast to the ears of humans, are the primary means by which they detect sound, rather than the ears. The “sound” produced by the bees’ wagging dance is 250 oscillations per second (250Hz).

Do bees respond to noise?

Bees have long been known to respond to comb vibrations, also known as substrate-borne sound, by moving upward and even fleeing the hive. However, it has only recently been proven that bees can also detect airborne sound.

What noise attracts bees?

A study found that bees can detect the movement of air particles in relation to airborne sounds and can detect frequencies up to 500 Hz. In other words, bees are drawn to music that has a frequency of 250-500 Hz because it resembles the sounds they make in the hive.

Should you talk to your bees?

EASY DOES IT: Beekeepers who are working on hives should proceed slowly, quietly, and gently. Because of the work of Karl von Frisch and Maeterlinck, we know that bees communicate with each other.

Are bees scared of loud noises?

Similarly, the bee is affected by noise pollution, which has a unique effect on its natural behaviors. As if the noise had put them into shock, honeybees will stop moving for around 20 minutes when they encounter noises between 300Hz and 1kHz at an intensity of between 107 and 120 dB.

What do bees do with their dead?

Honeybees remove diseased or dead nestmates from the hive by picking them up and dragging them away. In densely packed hives, infection can spread like wildfire if corpses are not removed from the hive. The University of British Columbia’s Alison McAfee says, “The honeybees work together to fight off disease.”
