Soap can be colored with any liquid dye that is water-based. Also, you can use natural colorants such as mica and oxides. To avoid clumping in the soap, these should be diluted in a small amount of rubbing alcohol first. We have a huge selection of soap-safe, water-based liquid dyes.

What can be used to color soap?

It is permitted to use up to one-half teaspoon of soap per pound of soap. 100 percent isopropyl alcohol is mixed with one teaspoon of mica. A quarter teaspoon of dispersed color is all that is needed to achieve the desired color in a melted bar of soap. This technique has the added benefit of speeding up the color mixing process.

Can you use food dye in melt and pour soap?

Even though this is a safe choice, it is not recommended. Fading will be a problem because the color isn’t going to hold up as well. These dyes tend to bleed into each other when used in multiple colors.

Can I use eyeshadow to color soap?

Mica and talc are the main ingredients in eyeshadow, as others have stated. Because it is clearly cosmetic grade, it is safe to use. Because they aren’t using high-pH stable micas, you may have to add a lot to get a good depth of color and it may morph.
