Can chiropractors help with Spina bifida?

Writer Rachel Davis

Spina bifida is a condition present at birth in which there is incomplete closure of the backbone and membranes around the spinal cord. The spine has a gap or split, and so does the membrane around the spinal cord. The baby’s exposed nerves can cause problems with muscle tone and sensation. Spina bifida is something that usually requires surgery to correct. Chiropractors can’t help to correct the condition, but they may be able to help with associated issues.

Chiropractic management for spina bifida

The focus of chiropractic management for spina bifida is to help with issues in the lower limbs. Posture, muscle tone, and sensation are all likely to be affected by spina bifida. Chiropractors will usually use a combination of spinal adjustments and soft tissue massage to reduce stiffness and improve mobility in the joints. Gentle stretches and exercises may also be given to strengthening the lower limbs.

It is usual for chiropractors to recommend exercise and stretches for their clients with spina bifida. This will help them stay strong and active, even while they are developing their flexibility.

In some cases, a referral to an orthopedic surgeon or similar will be given. In rare cases, the chiropractor may refer their client to a specialist spinal physiotherapist.

It is important for anyone with spina bifida to stay active and strong. This helps them develop good posture, which can improve mobility in the long term. A regular chiropractic check-up can help them to stay fit and healthy, developing the muscles around the spine as they grow. This will improve the quality of life because the patient will be able to do a few things on their own rather than completely relying on the help of others. As such, chiropractors are helpful to patients with the Spina bifida condition.
